September, 2010. A downbound ride from the Blue Ridge Parkway on Virginia 56. This was our (7 guys) second year in a row for this road. It actually is more fun than the Dragon's Tail at Deal's Gap. Although the video makes it seem like the road is level, it's actually very steep: 9-12% grades in spots. In 2009, on our ride there, one of our buddies wiped out in the right side ditch at either 1:41 or 2:10.He got banged up a bit, but after a short hospital visit in Buena Vista and some banging on his bike, he was able to ride home. We carried on for for 5 more days. You have to use engine braking more than wheel braking or they fade quickly. Engine braking allows the braking heat to be efficiently dissipated by the engine fins rather than the relatively small brake rotors. The ride ends in a little town named Vesuvius where we have a little debrief and yuk and remark about how the rode was not as bad as last year when our buddy wiped out.
